Message Last summer I bought an N/A 300zx with stock 16x7.5" wheels with 225/50/16 tires. Pretty standard stuff. I wanted to give the Z a more sporty look and after looking at hundreds of wheel styles I decided that the SSR GT1 was exactly what I was looking for. For the past year I have searched for a set of 17x8, 17x9, 18x8, or 18x9 GT1s in excellent condition but have been unable to find a good clean set. I did recently locate a set of 18x7.5s and while they are not ideal width, after doing quite a bit of research, I have found that they will work for me for now while I continue to search for a wider set of these particular wheels.

The wheels came with Toyo Proxes 225/40/18s which after looking through the FAQ on this site, seems to match closest with the measurements on the stock wheel & tire set-up. I personally think the tire profile looks a bit thin so I was thinking about going to a bigger tire to improve ride quality and aesthetics (ie: get a little more meat between the wheel and the road and fit the wheel well better).

The guys at the tire shop recommended a 245/40/18 but after researching those measurements, I found it was not recommended for tires less than 8" wide, although some of you claim to run them on 18x7.5s with no problems. What are your thoughts on 235/40, 235/45, 240/40, or 240/45? Is there enough gain in these larger tire sizes to make purchasing them worthwhile or should I just stick with the free set of 225/40s that I have. Will these tires fit the car without rubbing and what size will look best?

I appreciate all suggestions regarding my tire options, but please refrain from commenting on going with a wider wheel. I am fully aware that wider is better, but for now I am going to run these 18x7.5s and could use your expertise on what tire will look and work best so I can get back on the road this summer and enjoy my Z to the fullest.

Thank you as always.
